Pain in a tooth will come from problems either inside the tooth or the adjacent tissues, such as:

• Dental Cavities  or lost fillings
• Wisdom Teeth
• Injuries or trauma causing broken, fractured or cracked teeth
• Periodontal Disease, an infection or inflammation of the gum tissues that surround the tooth
• Pulpitis, an infection or  inflammation of the inside of the tooth
• Grinding or Bruxism

• Take pain relievers until you can get into our office like Advil or Tylenol, avoiding Aspirin

Fractured, Cracked or Broken Tooth

Dr Kimmelman will need to evaluate a broken or fractured tooth to best determine the severity and extent of the damage.

Steps to take:

• Call our office to get an appointment with Dr. Kimmelman ASAP!
• Take pain relievers until you can get into our office like Advil or Tylenol, avoiding Aspirin
• If there is any bleeding or swelling, apply pressure to the site and a cold compress outside the mouth

Soft Tissue Injuries

Depending on the severity, injuries to the cheeks, tongue, lips, and gums might require stitches to advance healing.

Steps to take:

• Call our office to get an appointment with Dr. Kimmelman ASAP!
• Take pain relievers until you can get into our office like Advil or Tylenol, avoiding Aspirin
• Apply pressure to the bleeding site
• Apply cold compress outside of the mouth in the affected area

Simple Precautions to Avoid Dental Emergencies

• If you have a cavity – get it filled BEFORE you “feel” it – once you “feel” it the decay might have affected the nerve of the tooth
• Regular check-ups will catch dental issues when they are small and prevent future complications
• Wear a night guard at night. The custom-made appliance will take the wear and tear from clenching and/or grinding preventing fractures and sore jaws
• Avoid chewing on hard candy, ice, and popcorn kernels, which can fracture a tooth.
